Klaus Biesenbach, director of MoMa’s PS1, loves a vacuum. For years, he lived in a nearly empty apartment on the Lower East Side. Last summer, he loaned the place to an artist friend, who brought in a sofa, table, and chairs and painted the whole place white. (Photos 1 and 2: Tony Cenicola/The New York Times)

Todd Waterbury, a creative director and brand consultant, lives in a strictly designed apartment in shades of gray. (Photos 3-5: Trevor Tondro/The New York Times)

At $1 a pop, Jesse McKinley, a reporter for The Times, set up his new apartment with objects he found at dollar stores, spending about $200 in total. While dollar stores used to be known for their plastic products that wore out in a matter of days, nowadays many sell merchandise made of real glass, stainless steel, and ceramics. 220/365: Christmas Tree
I don’t put up my own tree because I live down the street from my parents, and I’m always home for Christmas. But I have this little ceramic Christmas tree that was made by my grandmother or great-grandmother… somebody, I can never remember. [my flickr]
